Women face challenges to achieve self-independence
Women still have to face a barrage of challenges in order to break the glass ceiling at workplaces and thereby achieve self-independence, said speakers at a seminar yesterday.
United Commercial Bank (UCB) organised the seminar titled “High Tea: Women Leadership, Experiences and Empowerment” at Radisson Blu Chittagong Bay View in the port city.
Women entrepreneurs from Dhaka and Chittagong shared their experiences in the seminar.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Prof Shireen Akther said women empowerment is a tough job especially in the male-dominated society.
Some women still fear that they will be considered inefficient and demotivated if they start a family after joining a job, said Mahmuda Chowdhury, advisor, international relation and communication, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.
Besides, some people believe that males are more eligible, focused and can perform better than females. Therefore, a little mistake at workplace can even cause grave damage to the career of female staffs, she added.
Mahmuda urged women to be confident about their potentials and learn from their mistakes.
“We have a long way to go even though women are making entries to every sector of social, economic and political spheres. Women can only break through the glass ceiling if they are ready to help themselves”, she said.
Rukhmila Zaman, chairperson of UCB; Nasreen Fatema Awal, vice-chairperson of the Multimode Group; Latifah Huque Liu Lucy, managing director of Lucy Beauty Parlour, and Dilruba Ahmed, founder of Little Jewels School, were present among others.
