Verdict on plea against 3yr jail on March 23
The judgement on Former president HM Ershad's 25-year-old appeal against a lower court verdict of three years' jail term for corruption will be delivered by the High Court on March 23.
The bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus set the date after concluding hearing on the appeal.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, lawyer of the Anti Corruption Commission told The Daily Star that the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption had filed the case against Ershad with Cantonment Police Station in 1992 on charge of misappropriating Tk 1.91 crore through abuse of power during his tenure as the president of the state from December 11, 1983 to December 6, 1990.
On February 3, 1992, a Dhaka court convicted Ershad, also chairman of the Jatiya Party, and sentenced him to three years' imprisonment for misappropriating the money and ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate the money as well as his Toyota Land Cruiser car.
Ershad the same year filed an appeal with the HC, challenging the lower court judgment.
Following the appeal, the HC stayed the lower court verdict, Khurshid said, adding that Ershad had obtained bail from the HC in the case as he served three years in jail in the case.
