Uranium tests not done properly
The government did not carry out substantial tests to detect whether water in flood-affected Haor areas is contaminated by uranium, some eminent citizens alleged yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference on the sufferings of the flood-hit people, they also called upon the government to carry out proper tests on the alleged presence of uranium in the Haor area water and to make it public.
Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), a platform that advocates for good governance, organised the conference at Jatiya Press Club. Presided over by SHUJAN President M Hafiz Uddin Khan, the speakers demanded that the government declare flood affected areas as disaster-prone. “The test should not be limited to only water. The government should have taken some more time and test samples of dead animals of Haor areas. The government should make public the test report on uranium and coal mine,” Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association chief executive Syeda Rizwana Hasan said.
Journalist-columnist Syed Abul Maksud, also an executive member of SHUJAN, said it seemed BNP had got a political issue because they were saying uranium in the Haor areas had come from India. “But what are they doing? They are not standing beside the people to mitigate their sufferings.”
