Unbecoming of a policeman
A four-year-old boy sustained injuries falling on the road from a moving motorcycle after a traffic constable allegedly pulled the hand of his mother on the rear seat at a checkpoint near Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital Wednesday.
Tawsif Hossain Sadaf suffered injuries in the head, face and nose. A video clip of the wounded boy went viral on social media.
Tawsif's father Saddam Hossain Setu who was driving the motorcycle alleged that “a traffic constable, named Maksud, appeared suddenly in front of his motorcycle at the checkpoint to stop him.“As I took a left turn immediately, the constable pulled the hand of my wife, and she and my son fell off,” Setu told The Daily Star. His wife Koohinur Akhter Happy sustained minor injuries, he claimed.
Saddam was not wearing any helmet. He was also talking over the phone while heading towards a relative's house at around 3:00pm on Wednesday.
“Why police will pull a passenger from a moving motorcycle? They can inform the official of the next checkpoint if I violate anything or chase me down,” he said, adding this incident could be fatal for his son. “Doctors, after giving treatment on that day, asked me to take my son to hospital in case he was vomiting or facing difficulties within 72 hours,” he further said.
This newspaper could not communicate with Maksud for his comments. Sergeant Imrul Islam, who was in-charge at the checkpoint on that day, however, said they might fall on the road due carelessness as the bike rider was on the phone when he was signaled to stop. “I didn't know of pulling anyone's hand by any constable,” said Imrul, who later took to the child to a local hospital.
