Two RU staff 'beaten by cops'
Two employees of the transport section of Rajshahi University (RU) were allegedly beaten by two police officers of Paba Thana in Nowhata area of the city on Thursday.
The staff are bus driver Saiful Islam and its supervisor Ashikur Rahman Hira. They were given primary treatment at the university medical centre.
M Abul Kalam Azad, supervisor of the university transport section, said on Thursday afternoon Saiful stopped the university bus in Nowhata area for the students to get off.
Meantime, Meherul Islam, sub-inspector of Paba Thana, who was in civil dress, asked Saiful to move the vehicle.
When Saiful said he cannot do so before the students get off, the SI along with another police official started beating them, he said quoting Saiful.
Contacted, Parimon Chakrabarty, officer-in-charge of Paba Thana, said Meherul did not beat them. “The driver was talking over the phone stopping the bus in the middle of the road. Meherul asked him to move the bus. But he got out of it carrying a stick to beat Meherul. Locals then beat them up.”
RU Proctor Lutfor Rahman said he heard about the incident and requested Motihar police to look into it as the university falls under the jurisdiction of the Motihar Police Station.
He said further steps will be taken after getting a complaint from the staff.
SI Meherul could not be reached over the phone despite several attempts.
