Two get death, two others life imprisonment
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced two youths to death and two others to life term imprisonment for double murder in 2010.
Technician Jakiur Rahman Jewel and his friend Sabuj were killed by a group of miscreants led by Suporna, girlfriend of Sabuj, in Gulshan area on August 20, 2010.
The condemned convicts are Kaiser Mollah and Farhad Gazi alias Farhad of Uttar Khan area while the lifers are Md Suruj Miah and Suporna.
Of them, Suruj Miah was present in the court yesterday. Kaiser and Farhad went into hiding after getting bail from the High Court and Suporna has been absconding since the incident took place.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge said, adding that the death row convicts can appeal to the higher court within 30 days.
Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka delivered the verdict.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence had completed their arguments.
According to the prosecution, Farhad allegedly planned to kill Sabuj, 22, following previous enmity over a love affair.
As per his plan, Farhad and the other accused called Sabuj to meet Suporna in Bhadul area of Pubail to watch shooting on August 20, 2010.
When Sabuj along with his friend Jewel went to the spot, the accused slaughtered them and dumped their bodies in a bush there.
Later, police arrested Tuhin Madbar and Suruj Miah and on the basis of their statements police recovered the skeletons of the two youths from Bhadul area on September 10, 2010.
Tuhin and Suruj gave confessional statements before magistrates on different dates.
DB Sub inspector Hafizur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against the four people on June 3, 2011. DB submitted another charge sheet against Tuhin as he is a juvenile.
