Bus crashes into tree, killing two
Two passengers were killed and at least 10 others injured when a bus hit a tree beside Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the capital's Matuail of Jatrabari yesterday morning.
The accident took place when the driver of the Noakhali-bound “Ekushey Paribahan” bus from Dhaka was overtaking a CNG-run three-wheeler, said Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman of Jatrabari Police Station.
One of the dead, Mainul Hossain Pantha, 19, was a class XII student of Mohammadpur Model College while the other deceased was a 12-year-old girl.
Pantha's uncle Helal Uddin said his nephew was going to his village home at Maijdi in Noakhali on Eid vacation.
Four of the wounded took treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while the rest were treated at local clinics, said police. Police seized the bus but the driver and his helper fled away.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent reports, Asadur Rahman Sarcar, 55, an officer of Agrani Bank, Panchagarh Branch, died as a truck hit his motorbike on Panchagarh-Banglabandha highway in Litchitala of Panchagarh municipality yesterday while he was returning home from a market.
He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital. Protesting the accident, agitated locals blocked the road for two hours.
