Swapno, Muslim Sweets fined for stale, adulterated food
A chain supershop outlet and a sweetmeat store in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area were fined Tk 1.5 lakh each for selling stale and adulterated food.
The Swapno chain supershop outlet was found selling some expired food products and some other products at a higher price, said executive magistrate Sarawat Mehjabeen.
Iftar products at Muslim Sweets were found tainted with chemicals.
Swapno’s spokesperson Tanim Karim alleged “they were not given the chance for explanation.”
Swapno, Muslim Sweets protest penalty
In a statement this evening, ACI Logistics Ltd, which runs country’s biggest retail chain Shwapno, said authorities from the Consumers Rights Association of Bangladesh (Crab) fined it for alleged non-compliance with government regulations.
Terming the penalty as “not valid”, the approach taken by the authorities did not support a fair and justified outcome, it reads.
The ACI Logistics said prices of goods are the same for Shwapno as all other retailers. “So there is no scope for Shwapno to set excessive prices.”
“However, inconsistent and often unfair action by various authorities is causing significant damage to the retail sector and the brand as well. It is critical for the wellbeing of consumers and all other stakeholders that government regulations are enforced in a transparent and fair manner,” said the ACI Logistics statement.
On making iftar items with chemical, Mohammad Ali, owner of Muslim Sweets, said they were not using any chemical.
