Stay on N'ganj dist council polls sought
A petition was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking a stay order on holding the Narayanganj District Council election slated for December 28.
In his petition, Md Shahjalal, a resident of Narayanganj's Araihazar upazila, also sought a stay on the effectiveness of the existing voter list meant for the district council polls, claiming that the list is faulty.
Shahjalal's lawyer Eunus Ali Akond told The Daily Star that the mayor and councillors of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) were listed among others in the voter list for the district council polls.
But, their tenure as voter expired on November 27 this year as they took oath on November 27, 2011 for five years, he said.
According to relevant provisions of the District Council Act-2000 and District Council (Amendment) Act-2016, the NCC mayor and councillors, who will be elected through the NCC polls to be held on December 22, will be included in the district council election's voter lists, Eunus added.
The HC is likely to hear the petition today, he mentioned.
