Status quo on market construction on Agargaon canal
The Supreme Court today directed the authorities concerned to maintain status quo for next four weeks on construction of a 17-storey market by grabbing the land of a canal at Agargaon in Dhaka.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Hasan Foez Siddique came up with the order following a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh challenging a High Court order.
HRPB’s lawyer Advocate Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star that following a writ petition filed by his client, the HC on November 30 last year directed the government to stop construction of the 17-storey market in 48 hours and the order was executed.

But, the HC on January 22 this year vacated its November 30 order following a petition filed by Momota Housing Limited, a private business organisation which was constructing the building by grabbing land of the canal, he said.
HRPB today moved a petition before the apex court chamber judge seeking stay on the HC’s January 22 order, Advocate Manzill said, adding that Momota Housing cannot continue construction of the building following SC chamber judge’s order.
