State-of-the-art nat'l data centre closer to reality
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently given the nod to taking on a $154 million concessional loan from a Chinese state bank, for establishing a “Tier-IV National Data Centre” in the country to ensure safe and secure data storage.
An official at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) said that on April 10, Sheikh Hasina approved the approximate Tk 1,200 crore loan agreement with the Exim Bank of China, likely to be signed soon.
The Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division has also cleared the draft agreement. On March 31, Finance Minister AMA Muhith gave his consent.
An eight-member government team held a meeting with the Chinese authorities on March 3 at the ERD, and the agreed minutes were signed by the Chinese Exim Bank's Deputy Division Chief of Concessional Loan Department Zhang Yun, and ERD Additional Secretary Md Asif Uz Zaman afterwards.
Once the project is implemented, Bangladesh will have its own state-of-the-art data centre, said the ERD official, adding, the centre will be installed on seven acres of land at Kaliakoir Hi-Tech Park.
The national data centre would need to be housed in a maximum-security building for ensuring data safety.
Bangladesh Computer Council has been entrusted with the task of implementing the project by June 2018.
