Smart nat'l ID production begins next month
The Election Commission will start producing smart national identity cards (NID) by the start of next month for distribution among voters for free.
The people living in Dhaka and its adjacent districts will get the cards first and people of other regions later, Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz told journalists at his office at the EC Secretariat in the capital yesterday.
However, the EC did not mention any tentative timetable for starting the distribution.
There are over 9.62 crore voters in Bangladesh. Of them, smart NID cards will be prepared for 9.20 crore in the first phase.
A French company is working to prepare the cards, each of which will cost around US$ 2. Voters' personal information in detail will be preserved in the cards, said EC officials.
Initially, the cards will be distributed for free but people have to pay for different services like replacements.
