Shift lower courts to Keraniganj: CJ
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday urged the government to relocate the lower courts from Old Dhaka to Keraniganj near the newly built Dhaka Central Jail to facilitate prisoners' transportation and smooth judiciary works.
“If the magistrates' courts are shifted to Keraniganj, it will benefit the jail authorities to transport prisoners,” he told reporters after visiting Dhaka Central Jail.
“Dhaka judge's court is very crowded and congested. There is not enough space to sit or keep office files… So I discussed the issue with the bar association members and they agreed to my proposal on shifting the lower courts,” the chief justice said.
Justice Sinha said producing prisoners before court is often delayed for the distance, which hampers the court's activities.
Referring to the filmy-style ambush of snatching two death-row militants in Mymensingh during transportation, the chief justice said tendency of committing crimes had nowadays increased. This type of incident may occur again, he said.
He also hoped that the trial of the BDR carnage case will end soon as he has already instructed the judges in this regard.
Terming the judiciary the country's most neglected sector, the chief justice said the judiciary was yet to be digitised.
“All our prisoners are still registered manually for which many prisoners could not be traced for about six months to one year. I noticed it in Kashimpur jails, and as a chief justice, it will hurt me if anyone stays in jail without trial,” he said.
“We will not keep any innocent man in jail. It is a violation of human rights."
During his visit, the chief justice enquired about the prisoners and donated a good number of books, many on the Liberation War, of worth Tk 1 lakh, to the jail library.
Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin, among other jail officials, was present during the visit.
