Senate members with expired tenure get into JU syndicate
The Jahangirnagar University senate yesterday inducted two of its members into the syndicate and one into the finance committee though their memberships expired years ago.
Some teachers called the induction "unethical" and "undemocratic".
The senate unanimously accepted Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, former vice chancellor of the university, and Md Motaher Hossain Mollah as syndicate members, and AHM Sadrul Alam Harun as member of the finance committee.
Sixty-three out of the 93 members of the senate completed their tenures at least two years ago, and election is long overdue to the senate in different categories including teachers' representatives, registered graduates, and members of JU Central Students Union (Jucsu).
ATM Atiqur Rahman, a professor of history, said, “Therecan't be a good intention behind this." This indicates that the university is not being run democratically, he said.
As per the university act, senate members will be elected in a regular interval, and before every meeting, held once a year, expired memberships should be replaced with new ones. However, the act also states that if the new members cannot be elected, the old senate can hold the meeting.
On Wednesday, a group of teachers including Prof Atiq handed a memorandum over to VC Prof Farzana Islam, requesting her to reconstitute the senate before its meeting.
The VC was not available for comments.
