SC to hear today
A six-member bench of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division will hold hearing today on the contempt of court rule against Janakantha editor and publisher, and its executive editor over an article published on Salauddin Quader Chowdhury's family and a judge.
It issued the rule on July 29 against Janakantha Editor and Publisher Atiqullah Khan Masud and its Executive Editor Swadesh Roy for publishing an article on July 16 under the headline, “Saka Paribarer Totporota! Palabar Path Kome Gechhe” (Lobbying of Salauddin's family! Ways to escape have become reduced), written by Swadesh Roy.
Yesterday, a four-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha said a larger bench of this court will hold hearing arguments on the rule today, as the write up is involved with the integrity of the judges and judiciary.
Other three judges of the bench were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.
The SC rejected a petition jointly filed by Atiqullah and Swadesh urging Justice SK Sinha to reconstitute its bench for hearing the rule.
It also asked Salahuddin Dolon, a lawyer for Janakantha, to submit all the articles, which were published by the daily after July 29 and involved this court, before it today.
Atiqullah and Swadesh appeared before the SC yesterday morning as per its earlier order and they will have to appear before the same court today, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
The Appellate Division has now a total of seven judges including Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Justice Md Imman Ali and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury.
