SC extends stay order on Rana's bail
The Supreme Court yesterday extended its earlier order that stayed a High Court directive granting bail to Tangail's Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
The Appellate Division also asked the HC to hear and dispose of the rule, which was issued over granting bail to Amanur, in the next four weeks.
The four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, who is now performing the functions of the chief justice, extended its earlier stay order on the HC directive of bail until further order following a government petition seeking extension of its stay order.
Following a bail petition filed by Amanur, the HC on April 13 granted ad-interim bail to Amanur and also issued a rule asking the government to explain why he should not be granted regular bail in this case.
Later, the government moved a petition before the Appellate Division of the SC for staying the HC order.
Following the government petition, the apex court on May 8 stayed the HC order of bail.
The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found on January 18, 2013. Later, a murder case was filed.
Amanur is now in Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, his lawyer Rusho Mustafa told The Daily Star yesterday.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the government.
