SC to decide today if Zafrullah must pay fine for contempt
The Supreme Court yesterday fixed today for passing an order on the petition filed by Zafrullah Chowdhury, a freedom fighter and founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, against a tribunal verdict that fined him for contempt.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on June 10 gave Zafrullah a one hour jail sentence and fined him Tk 5,000 for criticising the punishment of Dhaka based British journalist David Bergman by the same court. Zafrullah was to pay the fine within seven days and suffer one more month in prison if he defaulted.
Yesterday, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date.
Abdullah Al Mamun, a lawyer for Zafrullah, told The Daily Star that his client might apologise to the SC today.
On June 16, Zafrullah filed the petition with the SC challenging the tribunal verdict. On the same day, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed the tribunal verdict and sent his petition to the full bench of the apex court. Bergman had been convicted of contempt in December last year.
