Saydabad truck stand evicted
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) authorities reclaimed around 50 decimal public lands evicting more than the three decades old truck stand at Janopath intersection in Saydabad today.
“It was our second attempt today to be successful to end the decades-old illegal occupation of the public land,” said Khalid Ahmed, chief estate officer of the city corporation, who conducted the drive.
Social nuisance of drug peddling and other anti-social activities had been going since long centering the unauthorized truck stand, he said.
The land has been occupied with scores of goods carrying trucks, around 30 concrete and semi-concrete structures housing small businesses and truck owners’ and workers’ union offices, he said.
Immediately after the eviction, City Corporation officials embarked on building boundary walls with the help of police vigilance, he said.
Replying to a question, Khalid said that the evicted truck owners could use the authorized truck stand, just close to Saydabad.
As to what they are going to do with the reclaimed land, he said that it would be developed with markets or some other establishment of the city corporation.
Around a couple of months back, a similar attempt was foiled in the face of resistance by transport workers and owners backed by local ward councilor Kaji Habibur Rahman, said Khalid.
Local government ministry later suspended the councilor on the allegation of creating obstruction to City Corporation’s eviction drive, he said.
The eviction was carried out as part of ongoing drive of the local government body of south Dhaka.
