Save Pahartali European Club
Socio cultural and right activists yesterday demanded that the government preserve the historic Pahartali European Club as “Pritilata Memorial Museum” in Chittagong city.
They speakers said the railway authorities, who have been using the club as their divisional engineer's office, have started refurbishing the structure which will destroy its unique historic appeal. They demanded that the authorities only carry out the necessary repair work without making any changes.
Pritilata Waddedar, an associate of Master Da Surya Sen, along with a group of revolutionaries launched an attack on the club having a signboard that read "Dogs and Indians not allowed” on September 24, 1932, and afterwards Pritilata sacrificed her life by swallowing potassium cyanide before the club, speakers said.
Chittagong District units of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Nari Mukti Kendra and Charon Sangskritik Kendra jointly organised the protest meeting.
