RU students protest 'cop torture' on BCL leader
Some 200 Rajshahi University (RU) marketing students formed a human chain for the second consecutive day in front of the senate bhaban yesterday, threatening to initiate “tougher agitation” if cops who allegedly beat up a fellow were not handed down exemplary punishment.
Kazi Aminul Islam Lingcon, in his fourth year and also Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) RU unit sports secretary, claimed he was beaten with sticks on a police vehicle by some 12 policemen who had picked him up from the RU mass graveyard area on Monday.
He said he had gone there on a visit with his girlfriend and younger sister around 5:30pm when one of their shoes went missing, leading to an altercation with the 12 sitting nearby.
Lingcon was taken to Motihar Police Station around 6:00pm and senior BCL leaders got him released three hours later.
Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir admitted that Lingcon had been beaten up but “it was not severe”. Talking to The Daily Star, he declined naming the 12 and the person in charge during the time of occurrence.
Police accuse Lingcon of verbally abusing them after they intervened in a “noisy altercation” he was having with his girlfriend.
