Rooppur nuke project to be modern, safe
The 2,400-megawatt Rooppur nuclear power plant (RNPP) is going to be a very modern project as additional safety measures have been taken to make it resistant to powerful tsunamis, claims a Russian expert.
Semchenkov Yuriy, chief of Kurchatov Nuclear Technology Complex (Kurchatov Institute), said additional measures have been taken in designing reactors while “emergency responding areas” are unlikely to exceed three kilometers in case of severe accident which means there will be no impact beyond three kilometers of the plant.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador in Dhaka Alexander A Nikolaev also mentioned that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is safe for Bangladesh saying those who are opposing its construction have a wrong perception.
"I must tell you the reactor which is designed for Rooppur Nuclear
Power Plant is not just safe enough but is at least 10 times safer
than Fukushima (Nuclear power plant) one," he said.
After the Fukushima power plant accident, checks were made on Russian nuclear plants. In mid-June 2011 Rosenergoatom announced a RUR 15 billion ($530 million) safety upgrade programme for additional power and water supply back-up.
Under an agreement with the government, Russia's state-owned nuclear power operator, Rosatom, will construct two units of the Rooppur NPP.
Deputy Director for the Research, National Research Centre, Kurchatov Institute, Prof Yaroslav I Shtrombakh was also present at the press interaction with over 30 journalists from various countries.
Responding to a UNB question, Cewevvu said the surviving time, in case of loss of energy, was six to 24 hours. “But it will be 72 hours for the project in Bangladesh to stay operational.”
Asked about the reactors to be used in the project the expert said there has been some improvement in every new innovation.
Though the cost of a power project like this cannot be specified before the entire project design is complete, it is assumed that it can cost up to $10 billion.
The entire project design is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
