Respect women irrespective of age
Speakers yesterday underscored the need for changing attitudes towards ageing women and urged treating them with respect considering their skills and intellect.
Newborns, toddlers, adolescents, youths, adults and old women have unique beauties depending on their age and respecting them for it will not create any problems,” said Dr Chowdhury Tasneem Hasin, nutritionist, United Hospital Ltd.
She was addressing a discussion, “How Old are You?”, jointly organised by The Daily Star and Dove at The Daily Star Centre in the capital.
According to a global research conducted by Dove, one in four women use a negative description about their appearance when asked how old they are, including words like “old” and “too fat”.
In fact, the age question makes women feel so uncomfortable that two in five women have pretended to be younger and will often avoid celebrating their birthday, reads the research.
Dr Tasneem, in the profession for many years, said the stress level among urban women over ageing was beyond imagination. “A good number of mothers come to visit with their soon-to-be-married daughters worrying over their weight and skin,” she added.
Group Managing Director of Asiatic 360 Sara Zaker, Bipasha Hayat and Ogilby and Mather Managing Director Fahima Chouhdury also spoke.
