While hearing a ruling, the HC also asked the owners to keep the building’s service lines active so that the traders can run their businesses.

The HC came up with the order following a report prepared by an expert team saying that the market building can be reconstructed without demolishing the structure.
On June 6, 2016, the Supreme Court stayed for six weeks the HC order that asked the authorities concerned to keep the shops of Mouchak Market closed.

The SC gave the order in response to a petition that challenged the legality of an order issued by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) for repairing the building.
The order came a day after the HC directed the authorities concerned to keep the shops closed until a certificate is received under the building code after the market is repaired.
Based on a report prepared by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) in September last year, Rajuk sent a letter to the market owners on May 2 2016 asking to vacate the shops and repair the market immediately as it became risky.
