Reckless driving warrants stricter punishment
Punishment for reckless driving has to be increased for putting an end to frequent road accidents, said Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain yesterday.
“The existing law provides for one or two years' imprisonment for the accused in case of any death triggered by accident. It should be increased so that drivers become cautious,” he said.
The minister was addressing a workshop titled, “Visioning Workshop” organised by the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) under Chittagong Strategic Urban Transport Master Plan at a hotel in the port city.
With the financial and technical help from the World Bank, the CDA is preparing the master plan in a bid to reduce traffic hazards and bring discipline in the sector.
CDA Chairman Abdus Salam, Panel Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni and World Bank official Shigeyuki Sakakai also spoke. The team leader of the project David Ingham presented the keynote speech.
