On August 26, 2013, Shirin Akhtar, 25, daughter of Azizur Rahman of Dumuri village, succumbed to her injuries caused by torture.
A court official quoting case documents said, Sohel often tortured his wife, Shirin, for dowry since their marriage in 2010. Unable to bear the torture, Shirin divorced Sohel two years later and went back to her parents' home.
Angered by the incident, Sohel along with his accomplices attacked her parents' home. Failing to strangle Shirin, they beat her mercilessly and cut tendons of her both legs on December 13, 2012, according to the case statement.
Her father took her to Dhaka for treatment, but she later died.
Shirin's mother filed the murder case.
Sohel gave confessional statement in the court, but went into hiding after he secured a bail.
