Prisoner in jail for 9yrs without trial gets bail
The High Court (HC) today granted bail to a prisoner who has been languishing in jail in a case for more than nine years without trial.
Saleh Ahmed Kalu, from Chauddagram upazila of Comilla, was granted bail to the custody of his wife Rizia Begum as he is mentally disordered.
The HC bench of Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice SM Mujibur Rahman granted the bail after hearing a suo moto rule issued by this court last month.
Advocate Mintu Kumar Mondol, a panel lawyer of the Supreme Court legal aid committee who has prayed for bail of Saleh Ahmed told The Daily Star that Saleh has been languishing in custody for more than nine years in a case filed for killing his father Abdul Aziz.
“Saleh Ahmed was mentally disordered when he killed his father,” the lawyer said.
He has been in the custody without any trial, as the lower court has not recorded any statement from any of the witnesses of the case, the lawyer also added.
