Police 'foil' port city BNP's human chain
Police yesterday "foiled" a human chain of Chittagong city unit BNP that was protesting the government's decision to increase power and gas prices in front of Chittagong Press Club.
About 100 BNP activists led by Dr Shahadat Hossain, city unit general secretary, gathered at the press club to form a human chain around 10:00am.
A few minutes after they formed the human chain, police asked them to leave saying they did not have permission to hold the programme, claimed witnesses, adding that afterwards the BNP leaders and activists had an altercation with police and at one stage police "took" the banner away.
The party activists left after that, they added.
Contacted, Monwara Begum Moni, president of city unit Mahila Dal, said the programme was not political; they were protesting as that was what the citizens wanted.
She said police took their banner and forced them to leave the place.
Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, however, said police asked the activists whether they took permission to hold the programme and as they did not, they left the place. He claimed police did not snatch the party's banner.
