Nor'westers fizz out heat, create traffic nightmare in capital
Nor'westers accompanied by moderate rainfall lashed the capital and some other parts of the country including Chittagong and Netrakona yesterday.
Residents from some parts of the capital, including Banani, Kakoli and Uttara, reported a moderate hailstorm during the squall's second phase, beginning around 6:15pm and accompanied by an average rainfall of 22 millimetres (mm).
In the morning, the Nor'wester hit around 9:45am, triggering a thunderstorm accompanied by a sudden torrential downpour averaging 16mm.
The average wind speed was nearly 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, said a Met official. The office did not have any information on damage.
Although the rains came as a relief from the pre-summer heat persisting for the last few days, it caused traffic congestion at many key city points.
“This phenomenon is natural and customary in the period between March and May,” the official said, adding that the country sees Nor'westers mostly during April.
A seasonal low lies south of the Bay of Bengal and might cause rainfall in some places in the country today, he mentioned.
Rain accompanied by temporary squally wind is likely to occur at a few other places in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions while one or two places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions, says the Met weather forecast.
However, day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
