No political motive behind accusing Khaleda
A prosecution witness yesterday told a Dhaka court that the Zia Charitable Trust graft case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was not filed to harass her politically.
Harun-or-Rashid, deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and also the complainant of the case, said this in reply to a question from Khandker Mahbub Hossain, chief lawyer for Khaleda.
Khandker completed cross-examining Harun-or-Rashid in the case.
After recording the statement, Judge Abu Ahmed Jomadar of the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka fixed August 10 for the next hearing. Hearing on the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case will also be held on the same date.
On the day, lawyers for two other accused -- Dr Ziaul Islam Munna and Monirul Haque Khan -- will cross examine Harun-or-Rashid.
Khaleda was present at
court yesterday.
Before starting trial proceedings of the cases, the judge asked the journalists present at the courtroom to publish thorough statements of the witnesses.
According to the charge sheet of the Zia Orphanage case, Khaleda, her son Tarique Rahman and four others embezzled Tk 2.1 crore by forming the charity that exists only on paper.
The statement of the other case says that the BNP chief and three others abused power to collect Tk 6.19 crore for Zia Charitable Trust during the BNP-led government's tenure between 1991 and 1996.
The ACC filed both cases.
