No need to deploy army for NCC polls: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad today ruled out the deployment of army in the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election claiming that the law and order situation is better than normal.
“A better atmosphere than the normal situation is prevailing in Narayanganj and it will improve gradually. The prevailing situation does not require the deployment of army,” Rakibuddin said while talking to reporters after a meeting with law enforcement agencies in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, the CEC held a meeting with top officials of different law enforcement agencies at the conference room of the National Economic Council in Agargaon area of Dhaka to hold the NCC election in a free, fair and impartial manner on December 22.
The CEC came up with the decision amid BNP's demand for deployment of army in the election from the very beginning of announcement of its schedule.
The CEC, however, said that the members of Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh and police will be deployed as usual to avert troublesome situation during the polls.
He also ordered the law enforcement agencies to take stern action if anyone creates trouble during the election.
The law enforcers will have to remain alert so that none can grab polling centre or put pressure on anyone to cast vote in favour of any candidate, he added.
