NHRC regrets member, official's 'misconduct'
National Human Right Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque yesterday regretted the “misconduct” of one of its members and an official with journalists covering an event at its office on Tuesday.
NHRC is taking departmental action against Assistant Director Joydev Chakraborty and will give special attention to stop any recurrence, says a statement.
The statement, however, did not mention whether it has taken or would take any action against the member, Enamul Hoque Chowdhury.
NHRC said to have seen a The Daily Star story yesterday over a meeting between NHRC chairman and leaders of garments rights bodies.
The meeting was held in a “very cordial atmosphere” and the NHRC chairman assured trying “their best” to ensure workers' rights and organise a meeting with every stakeholder as soon as possible, the statement reads. It said the report mentioned of Enamul's misconduct with reporters at one point of the meeting while Joydev did the same at the end.
The Daily Star report said Enamul tried to stop Rezaul from speaking several times, reasoning they had another “urgent meeting” downstairs with the BTMC chairman.
When journalists protested his attempts to stop the interaction, Enamul threatened complaining to their editors of the reporters. Joydev threatened to hand one journalist over to police.
