Vaccine from China - Will come soon, can’t tell exactly when: minister
Health Minister Zahid Maleque yesterday said the government will set up a vaccine production plant in Gopalganj soon.
"We are taking the issue of manufacturing vaccine in the country seriously. The prime minister is very sincere on this issue. She instructed us to take steps immediately to produce vaccine locally," he said.
Talking to journalists at his residence in Manikganj, the minister said, "We have taken initiative to set up a factory in Gopalganj. Although it will take some time, the process of work has started."
Maleque said China's Sinopharm vaccine will arrive Bangaldesh soon.
"We cannot say exactly when it will come. But the amount of vaccine will be good. We have to keep secrecy. When the vaccine arrives you all will know."
The minister said talks with Russia over Sputnik-V vaccine is going on and it is in the final stages.
"We will get vaccine but couldn't say exactly how many vaccines we will get."
The minister said the government in in talks with China and Russia over joint production of vaccine in the country.
"We have told them that they can go for co-production with government or with private organisations."
Zahid said Moderna's vaccine will also arrive in the country soon, adding that the government wants to rely on vaccine instead of lockdown.
"If the lockdown is enforced and the general people adhere to the hygiene rules, it will be possible to prevent the infections very quickly," he added.
