Two held over Mirpur double murder
Police suspect the murders of a woman and a teenager in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday happened following altercation over money -- centring prostitution.
Detective branch (DB) of police arrested two youths -- Moazzem (22) and Yousuf (23) -- from Sadarghat area yesterday evening in this connection. The arrestees were transport workers and frequented the house, said Shahadat Hossain, additional deputy commissioner (Pallabi) of DB.
“On Tuesday, the duo went to the flat, and engaged in an argument with the woman over money. At one point, when the woman threatened them with serious consequences if they don’t pay up, the duo first strangulated the teenage girl and then killed the woman,” the police official added.
Quoting locals, the official said there had always been frequent visitors to the flat.
On Tuesday, Rahima alias Shahida Begum (65) and Sumi (15) were found dead in the flat in Mirpur-2 area.
Autopsy reports suggest they were strangled to death, said Dr AKM Moinuddin, lecturer of Forensic Medicine Department of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College.
Morgue sources said they found evidence of sexual intercourse, but another test will be done to confirm whether the teenager was raped.
Police also detained Rahima’s adopted son, Sohel, a pick-up van driver, for questioning.
Rahima had been living in a two-bedroom flat of the four-storey building in Mirpur-2, along with Sohel, for the last six months. Sumi was hired as her house help on Monday.
The murders came to light when Sumi’s aunt, Tahmina, came to the flat on Tuesday and found the door unlocked.
Entering the flat, she found the bodies of Rahima and Sumi on the floor. Neighbours informed police of the matter, law enforcers said.
Rahima’s daughter Rashida, who lives in Narayanganj, said she could not say what items were missing. Rashida took her mother’s body to Narayangaj for burial while Sumi’s body was still at the morgue till yesterday evening.
