NCC polls fairest under current EC: EWG
Narayanganj City Corporation elections are the fairest polls held under the incumbent Election Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, Election Working Group (EWG) said today.
“The Election Working Group did not observe any incident of violence or vote rigging and found voters participation substantial amid multiple layers of high security,” EWG Director Abdul Alim read out a statement at a press briefing in the capital’s Cirdap auditorium today.
“In general, polling officials were neutral, voting was undertaken in an efficient and professional manner, and voters were able to cast their votes in an orderly manner,” the EWG statement said.
EWG, a platform of 29 civil society organisations, working for promoting fair election and good governance, claimed this.
There were total 174 polling stations in NCC election, of them the EWG observed 31 polling stations.
In the Thursday’s NCC election, ruling Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy bagged 1,75, 611 votes beating her nearest rival BNP's Shakhawat Hossain Khan by 79,567 votes.
Among the 27 councillor seats, AL candidates got 13, BNP 12 and Jatiya Party (JP) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) got one each.
Of the winner of nine women reserved seats, four councillors-elect belong to AL and two to BNP. The rest do not have any political affiliation.
