Nazrul's death anniversary observed
The 40th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed yesterday with due respect.
Nazrul, popularly known as Bidrohi Kabi (rebel poet), through his poems had inspired the people to fight against all kinds of odds and injustice and repression during the colonial rule, reports UNB.
Nazrul's songs and poems were also a source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the country's Liberation War in 1971. On August 27, 1976, the poet passed away in the capital at the age of 77 after suffering from a long ailment.
Different socio-cultural and political organizations chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
The programmes started with a Qurankhwani after the Fazr prayers at Dhaka University (DU) central mosque, reports our DU correspondent.
Students, teachers and staff of DU led by Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique placed wreaths at the poet's grave. Later a memorial meeting was held.
The DU VC urged the students to study Nazrul's writings so that they can be imbued with the spirit of patriotism.
Eminent Nazrul exponent and researcher Prof Emeritus Rafiqul Islam, DU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, Director of Nazrul Research Centre Dr Soumitra Shekhar, DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, also spoke.
Meanwhile, different socio-cultural organisations, including Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), placed wreaths at the poet's grave in the morning, reports the news agency.
In the evening, BSA arranged a discussion and cultural programme where Cultural Affairs Secretary Aktari Mamtaz was present as the chief guest.
Bangla Academy organised a solo-lecture session followed by a cultural show in the afternoon.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899 at Churulia village in Asansol subdivision of Burdwan district of West Bengal, India.
