Multiple grievances bring four depts of JU to halt
Academic activities at four departments of Jahangirnagar University have been halted for the last couple of days due to demonstrations of teachers and students for different reasons.
Students and teachers of the computer science and engineering and geological sciences departments have been demonstrating protesting the transfer of environmental sciences department to their building. They staged a sit-in before the vice chancellor's office for six hours from 8:00am yesterday demanding that the authorities find an alternative as, they claim, the building is not big enough for all three departments.
Meanwhile, all three teachers of the journalism and media studies department continued observing work abstention demanding resignation of the department chairperson.
Teachers of urban and regional planning department have also been boycotting classes with a similar demand to that of the journalism department.
Teachers of the two departments claimed the chairpersons have been misbehaving with them and running the departments in an autocratic manner.
Meanwhile, students of these departments are in fear of facing session jams.
The final examination of first year students under 2013-14 academic session was to be held last December, but those have not yet been held.
Abu Bakr Siddque, registrar of JU, said the departments have been urged to continue academic activities while solving the issues.
