Khaleda verdict govt's political blunder
The conviction and sentence against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case will be a turning point for the party, said Barrister Moudud Ahmed yesterday.
“It's a political blunder on the part of the government. It cannot realise the severity and depth of the reaction of the verdict,” said the BNP leader.
The BNP chairperson was sent to jail through “bringing false and fabricated charges against her”, he added.
The former BNP minister said these at a press conference organised by Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (JAF), a platform of pro-BNP lawyers, in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) auditorium.
He said people will reply to the “offences” committed by the government through ballot in the next national elections.
“The BNP chairperson has been kept in a solitary confinement where there is no other prisoner. Normally, it's the death row convicts who are kept in solitary confinement,” he said. Moudud demanded that the government keep her in a normal place and provide her with facilities she deserves.
He also said they would continue the struggle to release Khaleda from jail.
At the press conference, SCBA President and BNP leader Advocate Zainul Abedin in a written statement said people have not accepted the verdict against Khaleda Zia as a normal one.
The police administration has banned meetings and processions in the capital for an indefinite period at the directives of the government, and therefore, people's constitutional and fundamental rights have been violated, Zainul said.
He announced a peaceful programme from February 11 to February 15 at all the district bar associations' premises, demanding withdrawal of the “false cases” against Khaleda.
They would also stage the programme protesting the “wholesale arrest” of political leaders and activists.
