Jucsu the trump card
The demand for long-pending Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) polls starts getting prominence in the run-up to the election to choose 25 registered graduate representatives of the JU senate.
Three panels and individual candidates are making commitment to raise their voice for Jucsu polls if they are elected as registered graduate representatives.
At a press conference at the teachers' lounge on the JU campus yesterday, the pro-BNP panel -- Swadhinata, Sarbabhoumotwa, Bahudaliya Ganatantra o Bangladeshi Jatiyatabadey Bishwasi Panel -- made the commitment.
If their panel wins in the upcoming election, they will take steps to hold election to Jucsu, said Md Masud Hasan Talukdar Liton, convener of the panel's election conducting committee.
The JU authorities must ensure the coexistence of all students' bodies on the campus, he said.
Earlier, at another press conference on Tuesday, a pro-Awami League panel -- Bangabandhur Adarsha o Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwasi Pragotishil Jote [led by former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir] -- also talked in favour of Jucsu polls.
Contacted, former VC Prof MA Matin, who is the spokesperson of another pro-AL panel named
"Bangabandhur Adarsha o Muktijuddher Chetonay Pragatishil Graduate Mancho", said, “It (Jucsu) is the second commitment in our manifesto. We will try heart and soul to hold the election.”
An individual candidate, Rejaul Haque Kowshik, also promised to raise voice for Jucsu polls if elected.
A total of 4,373 voters will exercise their franchise to elect 25 registered graduate representatives on Saturday, said JU Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, also returning officer of the election.
Contacted, JU Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam told The Daily Star: “After holding the registered graduate polls successfully, we will think about holding Jucsu polls.”
The last Jucsu election was held in 1992.
