Int'l community expresses solidarity with Bangladesh
International community has expressed deep shock at the loss of lives and properties in Tuesday's landslides in Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts and offered to provide support.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a twitter message yesterday morning said, "India stands shoulder to shoulder with Bangladesh. We stand ready to support local search and rescue efforts if required."
In another tweet, he said: "Saddened by the loss of lives in Bangladesh due to landslides. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased & prayers with the injured."
European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon in a statement yesterday said, “If requested, the European Union stands ready to provide support to alleviate the impact of this severe natural disaster.”
The EU ambassador expressed his heart-felt sorrow and solidarity for the loss of lives and property caused by landslides. He also expressed his sympathy for those who have died while conducting rescue operations.
High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, Benoît-Pierre Laramée is saddened to learn about the landslides.
“We grieve with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones, and wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery. Our thoughts are for all affected,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Charge d'Affairs of US Embassy Joel Reifman in a statement yesterday expressed heartfelt sympathy to the families of victims.
“Your suffering affects us deeply. We also applaud the heroic bravery of the rescuers, those injured and those who in several cases paid the ultimate price to aid their fellow Bangladeshis,” he said.
British High Commissioner Alison Blake tweeted: “Condolences to the families for the precious lives lost in the #landslides in #Chittagong Districts. Our thoughts & prayers for all affected.” “Our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones after the awful disaster in #Chittagong, #Rangamati & #Bandarban,” said Danish Ambassador Mikael Hemniti Winther in his tweet.
