Human rights violation still ‘on’ at Dhaka jail: NHRC chief
National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque today said the violation of human rights is still persistent at the newly-built central jail in Keraniganj of Dhaka.
“Human rights are still being violated in the prison though the situation has improved to some extents after moving the jail to Keraniganj from Nazimuddin Road,” he told reporters at the jail premise.
The prisoners at the jail shared their views and experiences with the newly-made NHRC chief during his 30-minute visit.
“The newly constructed jail can capacitate only 4,590 people at a time, but more than 7,000 prisoners are dwelling in the jail,” he said while talking about the capacity.
Quoting the prisoners, Reazul said that irregularities in water and gas supply often led to delayed food supply.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 10 inaugurated the central jail in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
