Human chain against broadcasting local ads in foreign media
Leaders and activists of Electronic Media Marketing Association (EMMA) today formed a human chain protesting broadcast of local advertisements in foreign television channels.
The association leaders began the demonstration around 11:00am in front of the BSEC building at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka that continued for nearly one hour.
Speaking at the rally, EMMA President Ranjan Kumar Dutta said nearly three lakh people are involved in the industry. “If the advertisements are broadcasted in foreign channels, the association will face huge loss,” he added.
“We will hold further programmes in different places to drum up support for our demands,” he added.
Their 11-point demands include stopping ads supply to foreign channels using local funds, broadcasting Bangladeshi channels (from 1-25) as per the information ministry’s instruction and halting money laundering in name of buying foreign ads.
They also called upon the information and foreign ministries to play active role in allowing Bangladeshi channels in India.
The protesters said that if India does not allow Bangladeshi channels there, the country media industry may boycott them.
They will give memorandums to the finance and information ministries and prime minister offices in order to save their own culture, Ranjan said.
