HSC candidate stabbed dead at Holi festival
A Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidate was stabbed to death during celebration of Holi festival or the "festival of colours" in old Dhaka's Shakharibazar area yesterday afternoon.
Ronok Rahman Akon, son of late Shaheed Mia of Kamrangir Char, was a student of Azimpur New Paltan Line School and College.
Some youths beat up and stabbed him around 12:15pm when he along with his friends was celebrating Holi festival, said Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the OC.
“We are suspecting that some of his friends who accompanied him there might have been involved in the murder over a love affair,” he added.
Ronok went to Shakharibazar with some of his friends including four to five females and were revelling in the festival.
At one stage, around 15 youths encircled him in the crowd and stabbed him dead, his several friends told reporters at DMCH.
Samina Akter, sister of Ronok, alleged that some of his brother's friends, who called him out of the house around 11:00am, were behind the murder.
Ronok had an affair with a girl, she said, alleging that he might have been killed over the relation.
Police said they are trying to arrest the killers.
