Hold polls, follow Cameron's decision
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia last evening urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to following the example set by British Prime Minister David Cameron, hand over power to an interim administration and hold a free, fair and inclusive national election.
“You are hanging onto office usurping power illegally without people's mandate when an elected British prime minister is stepping down after the defeat in a referendum,” she told an Iftar organised by the Agriculturists Association of Bangladesh in the capital's Ladies Club.
David Cameron on Friday announced to step down by October after the people in the UK voted to leave the European Union.
Cameron had urged his country to vote Remain but was defeated by 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent, prompting him to resign on moral grounds showing respect to people's verdict.
Mentioning that the Awami League government often stated that it followed Britain and their democratic practices, Khaleda called upon the premier to hold the election following the UK's example.
“We will accept people's mandate whatever it might be. You should also accept the result if we come out victorious,” she said.
Turning to the country's agriculture sector, the former prime minister said the government was neglecting it and focusing on importing agricultural produces instead of taking steps to increase domestic outputs.
“They are doing this so that the ruling party can make money,” she said without elaborating.
