Heat wave intensifies across country
Heat wave is sweeping through the country forcing people to stay inside their houses or in cooler places to avoid scorching hot weather.
The searing heat intensified across the country with the mercury maintaining its upward trend. High daytime and night-time temperatures, high humidity, warm sunshine and a lack of winds are making lives miserable especially of those who have to work under the hot sun or live in non-air-conditioned houses. Situation is even worse in rural areas, particularly in northern parts of the country, as people have to spend more time in their farmland during the blistering heat.
According to the BSS, roads, market places and busy places in both rural and urban areas were deserted as people preferred to remain indoors to avoid the scorching heat.
An official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) told the BSS that both day and night temperatures have increased by four to five degrees Celsius than usual.
"The minimum night temperature was recorded nearly 30 degree Celsius in Dhaka city last night as some cloudy weather prevailed in the sky. This extreme heat may continue for the next couple of days as less rainfall is likely to continue this week", he added.
Yesterday, the met office recorded the highest temperature, 39 degree Celsius, in Rajshahi while on Friday Chuadanga experienced the maximum temperature, 39.8 degree Celcius, he added.
In Dhaka city, day labourers were seen facing difficulties to continue their works and had to take breaks frequently.
City dwellers now prefer to rush to their houses soon after completing their daily works. But it was a day for the vendors and shops which sell sugarcane and other fruit juice, and cold drinks and coconuts.
Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the regions of Dhaka, Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Chandpur, Barisal and Patuakhali, and it may continue, said weather bulletin of Met office yesterday, adding that day and night temperatures might remain unchanged.
