Govt urging Facebook to open local office: Palak
The government is urging Facebook to establish an office in Bangladesh in order to keep a better eye on the activities on the social networking site that has upwards of 2.2 crore users from the country.
Every second 12 new Facebook accounts are created in Bangladesh, said Zunaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for ICT, at a seminar on ICT, new media and revolution of the mass media, held at Dhaka Reporters' Unity yesterday.
“In the past, we were forced to block Facebook for security reasons -- there will be no need to block the site again if Facebook opens an office here,” he said.
Palak also touched upon the draft digital security law, which will replace the existing Section 57 of the ICT act. Under the digital security act, an offender has to face life imprisonment or a fine of Tk 1 crore for committing any offence.
Palak said journalists should be responsible and careful while using new media and avoid getting involved in any conspiracy in the name of journalism.
Jamal Uddin, president of DRU, Razu Ahmed, its general secretary, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, and journalist Ajit Kumar Sarkar, were present.
