Governance in climate finance needs to improve
Bangladesh needs to give more emphasis on good governance in spending climate funds, a new study suggested yesterday, upon evaluation of the country's performance in the area.
Bangladesh scored 3.09 on a 5.00 scale in climate change adaptation (CCA) finance, according to the survey report, made public at a workshop of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) at its office in the capital.
With support from Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin and Adaptation Watch, TIB conducted the online survey on 35 representatives of many government and non-government organisations involved with CCA financing, between January and March this year.
The study covered five governance indicators -- transparency, accountability, participation, coherence and integrity -- for prioritising, accessing, delivering and monitoring CCA finance.
Taking part in the workshop, ministry officials, development partners, and journalists stressed the need for strengthening collaboration among government, NGOs and donors for enhancing institutional abilities to improve the governance standard of CCA funds.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, TIB's executive director; Prof Dr Sumaiya Khair, its deputy executive director; Ian Tellam, director of Adaptation Watch partner Adaptify, and Zakir Hossain Khan, senior programme manager of TIB, spoke at the programme.
