Gold worth Tk 1.3cr seized at Dhaka airport, 1 held
Customs officials today seized 24 gold bars weighing 2.78 kilograms and detained a man at the domestic terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The detainee, Sarwar Kamal of Cox’s Bazar was a domestic passenger of a flight of Regent Airways that arrived at the Dhaka airport from Muscat via Chittagong. He boarded the plane in Chittagong.
In a random checking, the officials found the gold bars worth around Tk 1.30 crore inside his shoes while he was crossing the domestic terminal, said HM Ahsanul Kabir, assistant commissioner of Customs.
Sarwar claimed that he brought the gold from Chittagong but officials suspect that an international passenger brought them from Oman and handed it to him during his Chittagong to Dhaka trip to pass them through the comparatively lax checking at the domestic terminal.
“We are investigating the situation,” Kabir added.
