Gazipur city mayor gets freed from jail
Suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) MA Mannan was freed on bail from Kashimpur jail yesterday afternoon.
Subrata Kumar Bala, senior jail super of Kashimpur Central Jail-1, said Mannan was released around 1:00pm after his bail order reached the jail.
Mannan had been in the jail since April 16 last year.
Hundreds of BNP leaders and activists thronged the jail gate, and received the suspended mayor with flowers.
Advocate Shahiduzzaman, president of Gazipur District Bar, said Mannan would be admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka. Mannan, also an adviser of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, was arrested in his Baridhara residence in the capital on February 11, 2015, in a case filed for hurling petrol bombs at a passenger bus in Gazipur. Later, he was released on bail on March 2.
The law enforcers arrested him again on April 15, 2016. He was suspended from the mayoral office in that month. A total of 29 cases were filed against him and he secured bail in all those cases. After the suspension of Mannan, panel mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron has been discharging duties as the mayor of GCC.
