Gas leak fire burns 5 in Demra
Five workers of a restaurant suffered burn injuries in a fire that originated from a gas cylinder leak at Demra, on the outskirts of Dhaka, this morning.
The victims were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Sub-inspector Bachchu Mia of DMCH police outpost.
Among the injured, Faruk, 42, suffered 66 percent burn injuries, Chan Mia, 35, 57 percent and Harun, 50, 14 percent, Partha Sankar Paul, resident surgeon of the unit, told The Daily Star.
The two other victims -- Billal Hossain, 50, and Felani, 18 -- were released after receiving first aid at the burn unit, said the doctor.
The incident occurred in the kitchen of Red Chilly Restaurant in Monibagh area of Matuail, victim Billal said.
“We were cooking at the kitchen in the morning. Suddenly, a fire originated from the leak on a gas cylinder pipe and injured five of us,” he told reporters at DMCH.
The fire died down when the cylinder became empty, he added.
