Four arrested at Dhaka airport with 9 gold bars
Officials of Dhaka Customs House and customs intelligence separately recovered 19 gold bars weighing around 1.80kg and arrested four people, including two female domestic passengers, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday.
The arrestees are Dalia Khanam, Afroza Khanam, Sarwar and Biplab.
Sources at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the two female passengers boarded a flight from Chittagong when it landed at Shah Amanat International Airport from Bangkok en route to Dhaka in the afternoon.
Based on secret information, a CIID team challenged the two women at the arrival point after the flight landed at the Dhaka airport around 5:30pm, said Dr Moinul Khan, CIID Director General.
After searching their bodies, eight gold bars kept hidden inside their attires were recovered, he said.
During preliminary interrogation, they revealed that the gold bars were handed over to them inside the aircraft on the way to Dhaka.
Later, the CIID officials detained Sarwar and Biplab from the airport following information provided by the two women.
During interrogation, Sarwar and Biplab confessed that they are owners of the seized gold bars, Moinul Khan said.
They were handed over to Airport Police Station.
Meanwhile, officials of Dhaka Customs House posted in the airport recovered 10 more gold bars, which were kept in an abandoned condition inside the washroom in between boarding bridges 6 and 7 of the international terminal of the airport around 7:00pm.
